Sound Healing, Reiki, and Traditional Medicine: Working Together for Whole-Person Wellness

One of the questions I am asked often is:

"Do sound healing and Reiki replace traditional medical care?"

The answer is simple:

No.

At Selenite and Sound, sound healing and Reiki are offered as complementary wellness practices designed to work alongside—not in place of—traditional medicine, mental health care, and professional healthcare services.

In fact, I believe some of the most supportive healing journeys occur when multiple approaches work together to support the whole person.

There Doesn't Have to Be a Choice

Modern medicine provides incredible tools for diagnosing, treating, and managing illness and injury.

Healthcare professionals spend years developing the knowledge and expertise necessary to help individuals navigate physical and mental health challenges.

At the same time, many people are seeking additional ways to support:

  • stress reduction

  • nervous system regulation

  • emotional wellbeing

  • relaxation

  • mindfulness

  • resilience

  • overall quality of life

This is where complementary wellness practices such as Reiki, sound healing, meditation, breathwork, yoga, and mindfulness can play a supportive role.

Rather than replacing healthcare, these practices often help create opportunities for rest, relaxation, and restoration alongside it.

My Journey Began with Reiki

My own journey into holistic wellness began with Reiki.

Like many people, I initially approached Reiki with curiosity and an open mind. What I discovered was a practice that consistently helped me experience deep relaxation, calm, and a greater sense of balance.

As I continued learning, I naturally began sharing Reiki with friends and family.

The feedback was often similar.

People described feeling:

  • relaxed

  • peaceful

  • lighter

  • calmer

  • more centered

  • less anxious

  • more comfortable in their bodies

  • experiencing temporary relief from everyday aches, tension, and discomfort

What fascinated me most was how often individuals simply seemed to benefit from having a dedicated opportunity to slow down, rest, and receive.

Discovering Sound Healing

Years later, my curiosity led me in a new direction.

Out of genuine interest, I purchased my first set of crystal singing bowls.

At the time, I had no plans to create a sound healing business.

I simply wanted to explore them for myself.

What began as curiosity quickly became a meaningful part of my personal self-care practice.

The more time I spent with the bowls, the more I noticed their effect on my own ability to relax, slow down, and settle into deeper states of stillness.

There were moments of profound calm.

Moments where the mind became quiet.

Moments of deep relaxation that felt almost transcendent.

The bowls seemed to create an environment that encouraged my body and nervous system to soften naturally.

In my own experiences, I also noticed something else. During and after sessions, I often experienced a noticeable reduction in anxiety and physical tension. Areas of tightness seemed to soften, my breathing became slower and deeper, and I felt more comfortable in my body. While everyone's experience is different, these moments of calm and relief became one of the reasons I continued exploring both sound healing and Reiki as part of my personal wellness practice.

And the more I experienced this myself, the more I wanted to share it with others.

Combining Sound Healing and Reiki

As I continued practicing, I began intuitively incorporating crystal singing bowls into Reiki sessions.

Almost immediately, something felt different.

The sound appeared to help create an environment where individuals could settle more quickly into relaxation.

The bowls seemed to invite the body into stillness.

The vibration and resonance encouraged slowing down.

The atmosphere shifted.

Over time, I began noticing something in my own experiences as well.

The bowls seemed to help prepare the body to receive Reiki more deeply.

When sound and Reiki were combined, the experience often felt more immersive, more grounding, and more restorative than either practice alone.

Clients frequently shared feedback describing:

  • deeper relaxation

  • nervous system calming

  • emotional release

  • feelings of peace

  • enhanced body awareness

  • reduced feelings of stress and anxiety

  • temporary relief from tension and discomfort

  • greater overall wellbeing

While every individual experience is unique, the combination felt remarkably natural.

Why Relaxation Matters

One of the things I have come to appreciate most is that healing often begins with rest.

The body is constantly working to maintain balance.

Yet many people spend much of their lives in states of chronic stress, overstimulation, and nervous system activation.

When opportunities for intentional rest become rare, the body may have fewer chances to fully recover and restore.

This is one reason practices such as:

  • Reiki

  • sound healing

  • meditation

  • breathwork

  • mindfulness

can feel so supportive.

They create space.

Space to breathe.

Space to slow down.

Space to reconnect with stillness.

The Growing Science of Relaxation and Sound

Research continues to explore how sound-based practices support relaxation, mood, stress reduction, and nervous system regulation.

Studies involving singing bowl meditation have reported improvements in tension, anxiety, mood, and overall wellbeing.

Researchers have proposed several possible mechanisms behind these effects, including:

  • relaxation responses

  • rhythmic entrainment

  • reduced physiological arousal

  • focused attention

  • meditative states

  • parasympathetic nervous system activation

Similarly, growing research surrounding mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation practices continues to demonstrate the importance of stress management and nervous system regulation in overall wellbeing.

While more research is needed, many individuals consistently report experiencing profound states of relaxation during sound healing and Reiki sessions.

Whole-Person Wellness

At Selenite and Sound, I believe wellness is not an either-or conversation.

Traditional medicine has an important role.

Mental health care has an important role.

Sound healing has an important role.

Reiki has an important role.

Each approach offers something valuable.

Together, they can support the whole person.

Body.

Mind.

Emotions.

Energy.

Nervous system.

Spirit.

My goal is never to replace medical care.

My goal is to create a supportive environment where individuals may experience deep rest, relaxation, and restoration through sound, resonance, vibration, and Reiki.

A space to slow down.

A space to reconnect.

A space to simply receive.

Because sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer ourselves is permission to pause.

To rest.

To renew.

To reset.
